Galleri NB proudly presents Expansions, a solo exhibition by Marius Martinussen, featuring the artist’s latest paintings from 9 to 30 August 2025.

In Expansions, Martinussen unveils a new series of paintings that mark a clear evolution in his artistic practice—both thematically and formally. Like the universe itself, which is in a state of constant expansion, Martinussen reaches for new visual spaces and energies. The works appear as visual explosions in which form, colour, and spatial dynamics extend beyond the familiar.

Previously known for his stringent geometric structures and digital references, Martinussen now embraces a more organic and sensuous visual language. While retaining his precise use of colour and technique—often working with airbrush—his compositions have loosened and point towards the expansive and unpredictable.

Expansions is both a title and a condition: an expansion of the artist’s formal vocabulary and an exploration of how painting can function as a field of energy—something that both contracts and extends. The result is a series of works that vibrate in the tension between control and chaos, between the digital and the corporeal, the structural and the free.

With this exhibition, Martinussen continues his exploration of the potentials of painting in a digital age, while simultaneously opening new artistic territories. The works invite viewers into an experience of expansion—both visually and sensorially.

About Marius Martinussen

Marius Martinussen

Marius Martinussen (b. 1978, Kristiansand) graduated from the Trondheim Academy of Fine Arts (1999–2004) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki (2001). He lives and works in Oslo. Martinussen is a visual artist who works across the entire spectrum of abstract painting. Over the past decade, he has explored a wide range of formal concerns, persistently challenging the canvas surface—often in a playful manner and with references to art history, pop art, op art, photo-based painting, graphic design, and comic art.

Until 2015, Martinussen worked primarily with airbrush, a technique that links his work to mass production and popular culture—in contrast to the traditions of subjective painting. Since 2015, he has moved in the opposite direction, layering threads of paint on top of the airbrushed surfaces. The resulting works are tactile, three-dimensional experiences.

Martinussen has exhibited widely in Norway, Denmark, and Germany, and his works are represented in numerous private and public collections. He is a member of the Norwegian Visual Artists Association and the National Association of Norwegian Painters.
