Peak 12 – gable mural

Viborg’s history unfolds across 630 m²

In central Viborg, the PEAK 12 hotel and residential development features a striking work of public art. The 630 m² mural Når væggen fortæller historier (When the wall tells stories) was created by Danish artist Kristian Vodder Svensson specifically for the building’s east-facing façade.

A story of Viborg

The mural brings together elements of Viborg’s natural surroundings, history and culture in a single, unified composition. Its imagery includes symbolic references ranging from children’s fingerprints and the balance of royal power to the medieval Law of Jutland, pilgrimage traditions, Hans Tausen and the historic Hærvejen route. The city’s sporting life, brewing traditions and rebuilding after major fires also find their place in the work.

These stories are not presented as a chronological history. Instead, they are woven together across time, creating a vivid portrait of the city and the community surrounding the work.

Created for the building and its setting

Kristian Vodder Svensson is known for his richly coloured, organic compositions. In Når væggen fortæller historier (When the wall tells stories), his imagery interacts directly with PEAK 12’s architecture. Windows and other features of the façade are integrated into the composition, bringing the building and the artwork together as a whole.

The work was developed specifically for the east-facing end wall, built in smooth, form-finished concrete. Visible from many parts of the city, the façade marks the transition between Viborg’s historic centre and the stadium district.

An area with deep historical roots

PEAK 12 is a modern building housing a hotel, apartments and commercial premises, yet its surroundings have a long history. For centuries, the area historically known as Biskoptoften was a focal point for trade, religion, military activity, culture and ceremonies at which Danish kings were acclaimed. It is a place where Viborg’s identity has been shaped and rooted.

This historical significance became the starting point for the mural. Through its monumental scale and many layers of symbolism, the work connects the area’s past with the modern building and the life unfolding around it today.

A new landmark in Viborg

Når væggen fortæller historier (When the wall tells stories) strengthens the area’s visual identity and contributes to a vibrant urban space. The mural has become a new landmark in Viborg – a place where history, contemporary life and community meet through colour, symbols and stories.
