Petter Hepsø (b. 1973) has worked with sculptures of animals for a number of years. From his many versions of the sheep figure - to the bear, the moonfish, the frog or the deer, Hepsø's animal sculptures can be considered tools for probing the border between the animal and the human. While in the history of art the animal has often functioned as a mirror for man and his characteristics, Hepsø's sculptures do not allow themselves to be limited to imitation. They go behind the mirror via their questions about what humans and animals are in themselves. But this sculptural study does not seek to draw a boundary: neither around humans nor animals – nor between them. Hepsø's sculptures constitute a field where human gestures penetrate the animal body, as when human shoulders define a bear sculpture or a human gaze stares at us from a wooden moonfish. Elsewhere, the animal enters the human body, as when deer antlers grow from the head of a bust or a frog grows into a pair of walking human legs. Hepsø's sculptures map crossings and transactions between what we traditionally perceive as animals and humans: they are exposures of an existing richness of nuance in the space between humans and animals, which cannot be reduced to either.
