Kjell Nupen

-Sometimes I am left with a feeling of having succeeded and that what has been created has been worth spending a lifetime to find out. Still, I search further in my own world of expression in the pursuit of the optimal, and it may seem completely incomprehensible to a viewer. For me, therefore, it is never interesting to dwell on the last work.

Kjell Nupen was born in Kristiansand. Age 13 he decided to become a painter. He studied at the Art Academy in Oslo and at Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. Nupen reached his breakthrough in a relatively young age being both a painter and a printmaker, and he has for years been an acknowledged contributor to Norwegian contemporary art.
Multitalented as he is, Nupen exhibited his works in various contries. When he was only 20 years old his works were purchased by grand, impactful institutions. 
Kjell Nupen has also executed manifold decorations whereas one of his most famous creations is a sculpture installation for Otterdalparken in Kristiansand, which opened in 1991.

Kjell Nupen's works from the 1970s was to a high extend motivated by his critical gaze on the existing society. In the 1980s the political and offensive aspects faded, transforming his artistic work into a more contemplativ expression.  Landscape sceneries became a bigger part of the artist's repetoire, and his primary activities was laid in paintings and graphics. Colorful and formal qualities played a crucial role in Nupen's art. 

Kjell Nupen lived in Agder most of his carrier, and he would spend a lot of time in Tvedestrand. From year 2000 he lived outside Kristiansand in Norway.
