Through my paintings I examine the reality of the modern landscape. My work is based on the relationship between culture and nature. The interface between man and nature, and the balance between them. The cities are growing at the expense of the surrounding landscape. The human intervention in nature clearly leaves its mark. It's about exploring different environments. What is nature and how we treat the environment? Today we are confronted with an environment that can no longer be considered "natural". Can we still talk about nature? After all, more and more people are talking about nature, as if it were a nicely landscaped garden. How does it change the way we perceive and experience nature, landscape, and the world around us? Nature is increasingly something we create. An artificial experience characterized by globalization, urbanization, industrialization and individualization.
My work is about fantasy and reality, the individual and the world. It is not an accusation against modern society. I consider it a study of perception and change. It is up to the viewer to turn this into their own reality, to confront themselves. In my landscapes, I try to reconcile alienation and recognition.
My paintings are also about time. Past, present and perhaps future. It is a search of aesthetics in decay, impermanence and tragedy. I think the relationship between utopia, paradise and destruction is important in this search. Some form of escapism and romance arise.
German painting is inspiring and important for my work. Friedrich's work is imbued with loneliness, isolation and surrender. Nature is magnificent. The people in Friedrich's paintings look at the distance traveled or look at the road ahead. Past present Future. Sculptor David d 'Angers once wrote that Friedrich has created a new genre, the landscape tragedy.
The tragedy of the landscape. That's what my work is about.
