Shai Azulay er en gennemført kolorist og en ekspressionistisk billedkunstner.
Med paralleller til Matisse, Monk, Magritte, Richter, Doig og andre mestre sammensmeltes de på smukkeste og bevægende vis i kunstnerens udtryk.
I hans karakteristiske og mystiske billedfortælling, anvender Azulay elementer af bevægelse, proces og kontinuitet - også til malerier, der endnu ikke er skabt.
Selvom der ligger en umiddelbar fristelse i at tilskrive Azulay malerier nogle faktiske betydninger på grund af de dramatiske vendinger og sammenblandede elementer, så er meningen den, at de skal destabiliserer vores umiddelbare forventinger og i stedet tilføje værkerne en uventet dybde.
Beskuerne bliver således opfordret af kunstneren til at vende tilbage til maleriet for at undre sig over, hvad det egentlig er han beskriver i sine malerier.
